COERR Mae Sarieng had equipped refugee communities living in hazard - prone locations with capacity building course in Disaster Risk Reduction training in order to prevent or mitigate damages caused by natural disasters that may occur in their communities. Such disasters were flash floods, landslides, forest fires, storms, etc.
On 19 June 2019, a Training of Trainers (TOT) on disaster risk reduction was organized at Ma La Ma Luang camp by the experienced trainers from Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Provincial Office. The training aimed at enabling the trainees to transfer their knowledge and skills in disaster risk reduction to their community members. There were 103 refugees of 65 female and 38 male attending the training course which focused on providing knowledge about type of disasters that may affect the community, such as fire, heavy rainfalls that could cause landslide, flashfloods, storms, etc.
Then the class learned about disaster preparedness by making map of the camp showing safe areas for people to meet when there were emergency incidents leading to evacuation of people. Basic first aid for the sick or injured people was introduced. Needy equipment like Alarm, Survival Kits and Fire Extinguishers were listed. Alarm signal was always ready for use. Most of all, everyone was convinced to keep their ears and eyes open and alert for any emergency incidents for the mutual safety.
In conclusion, the training has drawn attention from the participants as the trainers were able to transfer knowledge in hazard and disaster risk reduction and preparedness in easy and understandable way to the Mae La Ma Luang camp residents.
